Our Favorite Flowers for Your North Central WA Garden

by | Apr 11, 2025 | Spring

If you didn’t know, we are BIG fans of flowers at Mountain View Lodge! In fact, our sister business, Antheia of Chelan, was born from our family’s love of blooms and the unique beauty of the growing environment here in North Central Washington.

With sunny days, a dry climate, and cool nights, certain flowers absolutely thrive in the Chelan Valley!

Whether you’re a full-time resident or looking for something to spruce up your vacation home, here are some of our favorite blooms to fill your yard with color.

1. Scabiosa (Pincushion Flower)

Why it thrives: Scabiosa is generally considered drought-tolerant and loves the sun (although you may want to plant it in partial shade for the hot Lake Chelan summer afternoons!) It also attracts pollinators like bees and butterflies.

When to plant: Start indoors in March or direct sow around late April, after the danger of frost (local lore tells us that when the snow’s off the Chelan Butte, you’re good to start planting!)

Bloom time: Late spring through fall (May–October).

Garden perks: Long bloom time, low maintenance, and unique pincushion-shaped flowers in blue, lavender, or pink. Great for borders and cutting gardens.

2. Mammoth Sunflower

Why it thrives: Sunflowers love full sun and well-drained soil, which we have in abundance. Mammoth varieties can soar over 10 feet!

When to plant: Direct sow seeds in late April to mid-May.

Bloom time: Midsummer (July–September).

Garden perks: Impressive height, edible seeds, and natural bird feeders. They make a bold statement in backyards or along fences.

3. Zinnias

When to plant: Direct sow after the last frost, around late April to early May.

Bloom time: Early summer to frost (June–October).

Garden perks: Huge variety of colors and sizes, excellent for cutting, and beloved by pollinators. They’re a go-to for bright, cheerful flower beds.

4. Black-Eyed Susan

Final Planting Tips

Check your USDA zone: Most of Lake Chelan falls in USDA zones 7a and 7b, so choose varieties that can handle late frosts and hot summers.

Soil prep matters: Add compost or organic matter to improve drainage and fertility.

Water smart: Drip irrigation or early morning watering is ideal for conserving moisture.

Happy planting, and be sure to check Antheia’s website for information on opening day around early June!
