As the leaves turn golden and the crisp fall air invites you outdoors, there’s no better way to enjoy the season than by embarking on a modern-day treasure hunt!

Imagine this: the sun glistens off the deep blue waters of Lake Chelan, the mountains in the background are dusted with fall colors, and you’re out on a mission, GPS in hand, searching for hidden treasures scattered along trails and scenic spots.

Welcome to the world of geocaching, an activity our family turns to time and time again! And there’s no better place to do it than around Lake Chelan and the charming Village of Manson.

What’s Geocaching?

Geocaching treasures

In case you haven’t heard of it (or maybe just need a little refresher), geocaching is essentially a high-tech treasure hunt.

Armed with a GPS-enabled device or just your trusty smartphone, you search for containers — called “geocaches” — hidden by other players. These caches can be tucked away in parks, under logs, near historical landmarks, or even in the nooks and crannies of urban areas.

Inside each cache, you’ll usually find a logbook to sign, and depending on the size of the cache, maybe some small trinkets or swag to trade. The idea is simple: find the cache, leave your mark, and enjoy the adventure of exploring new places!

Where Did Geocaching Start?

GPS and map

Geocaching started in May 2000 when the U.S. government made GPS technology available to the public. A man named Dave Ulmer wanted to test the accuracy of GPS and devised a clever idea: he’d hide a container and share its coordinates online, inviting people to go out and find it.

He called it the “Great American GPS Stash Hunt.” His stash? A black bucket filled with goodies like books, software, and a slingshot (because why not?).

Fast forward to today, and geocaching has become a global phenomenon with millions of caches hidden around the world, waiting to be found.

How Do I Do It?

Geocaching is surprisingly easy to dive into, even if you’re new to the concept!

Here’s a quick guide to get you started:

  1. Get the app: Download a geocaching app (there are several available, but Geocaching.com’s official app is a great place to start).
  2. Create an account: Sign up for a free account. This will allow you to track your finds and access the cache locations.
  3. Search for caches: Once you’re set up, search for nearby caches using the app. They’re rated by difficulty, so you can start easy and work your way up.
  4. Prepare for adventure: Dress for the weather (layers are your friend in fall!), pack some water, and grab a pen for signing the logbook.
  5. Find the cache: Head out to the coordinates provided and start looking! Caches can be cleverly hidden, so keep your eyes peeled.
  6. Sign and swap: Once you find the cache, sign the logbook, and if the cache has items inside, feel free to take one — just make sure to leave something of equal or greater value in return.
  7. Log your find: Back on the app, log your success and maybe even share a story or photo of your adventure.
