Knapp’s Hill Tunnel Closed

by | Jun 1, 2020 | Travel

There are multiple roads you can take to get into the Lake Chelan Valley, but the most popular route for motorists driving over the passes from the west side of the mountains takes you up Highway 97A thru Entiat. As of May 14th, 2020, Highway 97A has closed just before Knapp’s Hill tunnel indefinitely.

There are several remaining options for travelers coming to eastern Washington from the west side. Of the state. The shortest option would be traveling north up Highway 97 thru Orondo and turning west up Highway 150 at Chelan Falls and then following State Route 150 to Manson.

The second shortest option would be to take Highway 97A to the Navarre Coulee junction (Highway 971) and then following South Lakeshore Road until it meets back up with Highway 97A at Pat and Mike’s gas station. BUT, for the time being, this route will not be available for use Monday thru Friday from 8am to 5pm due to other road maintenance on Highway 97A between Entiat and the tunnel.

The last remaining option for traveler’s is to take the North Cascades Highway (Highway 20) out of Sedro-Woolley, thru Rockport and Mazama down into Winthrop. This highway eventually connects back with Highway 97 about 17 miles north of Chelan Falls.  It’s really a beautiful drive but travelers need to keep in mind that it is a seasonal use highway.

Before taking any trip to Lake Chelan, please consult the Washington State Department of Transportation for updated information about road closures, detours, or any other pertinent information. You could also call the Mountain View Lodge front desk and ask our knowledgeable staff about current road conditions.
